"Hope" conveys the Spanish civil war with an analysis of fascism. The fabric of the novel is set in Madrid, the city that will determine the course of the struggle. The front established by socialists with republicans, anarchists and unionists against the Fascist attacks is about to collapse all over the country. Military chaos also finds its reflection in ideologies. It becomes increasingly impossible to distinguish the views within the revolutionary army. The Paris Commune and the Soviet Revolution are images in the memory of the resisters as models of the past. There are always corpses among the trucks full of armed civilians, the constantly singing International anthem, and the discussions of strategy. Those who fell in conflicts, those who were shot... The line between life and death is always felt. In this novel, published in 1937, Malraux tells the story of the barricades destroyed by Franco, whose dictatorship would last for years, with the support he received from a part of the public. The author questions "Revolution" both as a concept and as a tragedy set in Spain.
