“I am a Cat, My Name Is Not Yet”

One of the most original and unforgettable works of Japanese literature, I Am I Am a Cat... This work, full of allegories and enjoyable to read, is the story of a cat who spends all his time observing people. Natsume Sōseki, who deals with characters such as secondary school teacher, Buddhist priest, artist, scientist and businessman with the language of this sharp and intelligent cat adorned with a subtle sarcasm, reflects the social situation of Japan in the Meiji period by blending his original perspective with his education in Chinese philosophy.< /p>

This unnamed cat, who feels closer to humans than cats, mockingly examines the secondary school teacher whose house he stays in and his close friends who come and go to this teacher's house, and does not neglect to touch on the daily issues discussed by the modernizing Japanese society. It will be an extraordinary experience to hear from a sharp-tongued cat about the ordinary people of a society that has not broken away from its ties and yet has become Westernized without a sense of admiration. And from a cat that had never even caught a mouse before.

The writer, born under the name Natsume Kin'nosuke (1867-1916), wrote his works under the pseudonym Sōseki. Following the education in Chinese literature and philosophy he received in Japan, he went to England and became one of the most masterful writers of Japanese literature after mastering Western literature.
