Philip Roth, who left his mark on American literature with his brilliant works in the 90s, looks back to the 50s in I Married a Communist. While telling the inside story of the McCarthy era, where spying, backstabbing, and blacklists took over, he examines the complex roles played by innocence and obsession in his country's national history. In this novel, he condemns the misguided idealism of communists.

Ira Ringold, a self-taught idealist communist who started life as a trencher in the 1930s, became America's sweetheart, the silent actor, after transforming into the famous radio actor Iron Rinn in the 1940s. He marries movie star and radio actress Eve Frame. A great devastation awaits Ira, who cannot reconcile his beliefs with the upper-middle class life he lives with Eve Frame. Their family drama reaches the level of a national scandal with Eve's betrayal. It is a story of cruelty, humiliation, betrayal and revenge that spills over from Ira's private life and takes place before the eyes of the public, at a time when red hunting continues with all its violence...

It successfully reflects the manifestations of American omunism in popular culture in the late 1940s. With a Communist I got married. It realistically recreates a period when anti-communist paranoia not only affected national policies but also seeped into the intimate lives of families. Roth's conveying of emotional details with sharp observations brings us to the great American tragedy, to the point where the American dream is incurably bankrupt. It will be another pleasure to read such a work, which deserves to be described as "an American tragedy", from the pen of Philip Roth, "the master chronicler of XXth century America".
