José Martí, the patriot, poet and essayist who became the symbol of the struggle for independence against Spain, was born in Cuba in the 19th century. He was one of the pioneers of the revolutionary poets he produced in the 19th century. He was killed during a battle while fighting to keep Cuba from becoming a colony. José Martí made a name for himself with his political articles written in magazines and newspapers, and made a great contribution to the modern literature in Cuba with his poems.
