In Another Country is the first book of stories by David Constantine, who is known in England for his poetry and his translations of classical German poets such as Goethe and Hölderlin. The book has received praise from important writers such as AS Byatt and AL Kennedy, and was chosen as one of the best books of the year by the Independent and Guardian newspapers in 2005 when it was published.
Constantine's stories sometimes freeze and frame human lives at a moment when the past resurfaces, and sometimes at the very point when the present collapses under its own weight: For example, the body of a young woman who has sunk into the depths with a wasted step, emerging from the ice fifty years later and melting the life of the lover she left behind with her tears... or the businessman who realizes that his soul has left him in the middle of a speech at a crowded conference...
Constantine masterfully portrays the inner worlds of his heroes, whom he places in unique locations in Ireland, Athens and Paris, and who cannot escape their hells for even a minute.
