According to Sumerian poets, Goddess Inanna is the ornament of society, the joy of Sumer. She is the daughter of the Moon God Nanna. She has lived in the legends of various societies for centuries, bearing the names Ishtar in the Akkadians, Astarte in the Jews, Aphrodite in the Greeks, and Venus in Rome. She represents the star Venus. She has been the symbol of beauty, sexuality, attractiveness, compassion, ambition, fight, leadership, cunning, and most importantly, fertility and reproduction. The stories written about Inanna, who was an endless and inexhaustible source of inspiration for Sumerian poets and bards, have survived to our time by being written on clay tamlets in her script. The most important and widespread of these stories is the marriage of Inanna and the Shepherd God Dumuzi, which brought fertility to the country. The subject of this book is this marriage story. Muazzez İlmiye Çığ has arranged this story as a three-act play. The first act is about the marriage of the Goddess Inanna with the Shepherd God Dumuzi; the second act is about the Goddess going to the underworld and sending her husband away in order to get out of there; the third act is about her husband coming out of the underworld after many efforts and uniting with his wife, thus starting the new year that will bring abundance.
