Inside the Serpent's Eye
Gönül Çolak, who was awarded the 2009 Yunus Nadi Award with her first book Komi ve Kemikler, creates strange, absurd, mysterious, stories in which dreams, reality and fiction are intertwined. It brings together many vulgar, surreal elements in an ironic manner. It tries to approach the traumatic quality, what is impossible to imagine or put into words, and even the reality outside of language, through language.
While looking into the deepest of fantasies that provide a framework for us to see reality; It leaves us face to face with the appearances of death, darkness, taboos, fear and love in that eye it throws out... A huge "inside" awaits us right behind the ordinary stories and daily lives we are dragged into. The deeper this "inside" gets, the more we stay "outside".
The stories are accompanied by an original fiction that pushes the possibilities of written narrative and disrupts the integrity of the narrative...
