Intermission
Virginia Woolf began to design this novel, which was first titled The Coming War, then Pointz Mansion, and finally Between the Acts, in 1934. He completed it in 1941. What is Between Acts? Is it that the rural audience living in a closed environment watching a play continue their own pathetic/ridiculous lives between the scenes? The period between the First and Second World Wars? Or is it the break that the Giles Olivers, who are bound together by the bonds of hatred and love, allow themselves for an afternoon? I guess all three.
