Interstellar Science
The movie Interstellar, which was highly appreciated by the audience, made a splash with its content, visual structure and contributions to science. Famous physicist Kip Thorne, the science consultant of the film, explains in this book the scientific background of almost every scene in the film.
Kip Thorne is known for introducing the wormhole idea to science fiction. The wormhole idea he gave to Carl Sagan for his novel Message in 1984 has been an indispensable element of science fiction ever since. Wormholes are used to travel faster than light in other science fiction novels and movies, as well as in Interstellar.
The movie Interstellar is based entirely on scientific theories. Kip Thorne divides scientific theories into three types: those that have been proven, those that seem to be provable, and the third type of scientific theories. The most well-known of the third type of theories, which do not contradict other scientific theories but have not yet been proven: string theories, are 5- or 11-dimensional spacetime. We have no evidence that these theories will be confirmed. However, since they are compatible with other theories, we cannot regard them as fantasy or imaginary. Maybe they will be falsified in the future and replaced by other theories, but for now there is no harm in trying to explain some phenomena about the universe by using them. Kip Thorne does this very well in both the movie and the book.
