According to the supporters of neoliberal capitalism, which has established its dominance all over the world today, the rich should be richer and pay less taxes in order for the poor to be saved from their misery, because this is in the interest of all of us. However, this generally accepted approach is inconsistent with our daily experience, abundant research results, and, indeed, logic. When we stop and think a little about this strange incompatibility between concrete evidence and popular beliefs, the following question comes to mind: How can these views remain so widespread and resistant despite all the evidence and facts to the contrary? The stranger, perhaps even more serious aspect of the matter is this: If it had not played a role in the current social inequality, which we have never seen before in history, which is impossible to accept but still growing rapidly, it would not be possible for these approaches to survive even for a day. So we are in a major moral crisis worldwide. However, Adam Smith, the greatest thinker of liberal capitalism, said as early as the 18th century: "The tendency to despise or at least ignore the poor and needy, while admiring and almost worshiping the rich and powerful, is the biggest and most widespread reason that collapses our sense of morality."

This short book, written by Zygmunt Bauman, one of the world's leading social thinkers, focuses on these problems. Bauman lists the assumptions and beliefs on which the views in question are based and which have not been thought through at length, and by tackling them one by one, he shows how misleading and deceptive they are.
