Island of Slaves - Hasan Ali Yücel Classics Book Description

Pierre de Marivaux (1688-1763): He is one of the French writers whose plays are most staged by the Comédie Française. He wrote it for the actors of an Italian theater in Paris and was nourished by the Commedia dell'arte tradition. Marivaux, who wrote more than thirty plays, was admired by brilliant minds such as Voltaire and Rousseau, and although he became the head of the Académie Française in 1759, he did not know fame while he was alive and died in poverty. Written in 1725 and performed by Italian actors, Slaves' Island is one of the few plays in which the 18th century spirit is more evident among Marivaux's plays. It is an optimistic and humorous comedy that deals with the burning issues of the Age of Reason, such as social inequality and slavery: Two master-slave couples end up on an island as a result of a shipwreck; According to the laws of this island, masters will be slaves and slaves will be masters.
