With Funda Danışman
Not As You Know brings together nineteen interviews conducted by two young researchers Funda Danışman and Rojin Canan Akın with Kurdish youth who spent their childhood in the Southeast in the 90s.
They tell about their childhood and adolescence, which were spent in an environment of intense violence: their education life, where they were treated as idiots because they did not know Turkish, and they received offers to become spies from time to time; their family lives, where their fathers, mothers, siblings and friends were beaten, killed, forced to work as village guards, and their homes were bombarded with bullets; We hear from them about their "everyday" lives on the streets, in an environment where "someone is constantly being killed or shot right next to them" or in the UN refugee camps.
Political discourses hide and cover up what individual people experience. Not As You Know should be read as a sigh of relief from these Kurdish youth to their peers in the West and big cities. If thousands of people say "When asked about my childhood, I think of hunger, disgrace, misery, devastation, bombs, war planes", if almost all of these young people say "It is not possible for me to forgive what was done to me, but peace is possible, I want peace", then there is a real situation that will appeal to conscience, not political concerns. In order to establish an environment of peace, the voices in this book should be listened to.
