"It Didn't Start With You" is the product of a mission, a mission that took me around the world, then brought me back to my roots and led me to a professional career that I had never considered or envisioned when I started this journey. For over twenty years, I have worked with individuals struggling with depression, anxiety, chronic illnesses, phobias, obsessive thoughts, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other debilitating conditions. Many come to me feeling discouraged and hopeless because years of talk therapy, medication, and other interventions have failed to address the source of their symptoms and relieve their suffering.

What I have learned from my own experience, teaching, and clinical practice is that the answer is not just within our own story. It may not even be in our parents or even their parents. Recent scientific research has begun to show that the effects of trauma can be passed on from one generation to the next. This "inheritance" is the subject of hereditary family traumas, as they are known. The emerging evidence confirms the reality of the system. The pain in the hereditary chain may not always end on its own or decrease over time. Even if the person who experienced the actual trauma has died and their story has been covered up and remained hidden over the years, fragments, memories and feelings related to their life experience may continue to live. It literally reaches from the past to the present to find solutions in the minds and bodies of people living today.
