İtalya Seyahati
Translation by Gürsel Aytaç, foreword by Thomas P. Saine, afterword by Roberto M. Dainotto, chronology of the author and period.
Italy Travel brings together the travel notes of the greatest master of German literature, Goethe, from his journey to Italy, the land of his dreams. On the morning of September 3, 1786, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe secretly leaves his home in Weimar without informing anyone and sets out to go to Italy, which he has dreamed of since his childhood. Goethe, who is tired of the fame he gained with The Sorrows of Young Werther, which he wrote at a young age, and his ministry position, hopes that this escape will be a cure for his dulled creativity. He changes his name to avoid being recognized and does not inform even his closest people about his whereabouts. This journey, which he thought would take a few months, ended up taking almost two years. Throughout the journey, Goethe makes in-depth observations about Italy's geography, people, culture and daily life. In these travel notes, which bear largely autobiographical traces, we also witness the author's personal transformation from a flamboyant life to a simple existence.
