Jacques and his Master

Jacques and his Master, the unforgettable duo in the history of literature, whom Milan Kundera, as a reader, remembered with love and longing on the streets of war-torn Prague, and who, as a man of letters, equated with Don Quixote, Tom Jones and Ulysses, will one day be remembered by Kundera. He is a guest on the theater stage. Diderot's XVIII. Kundera expresses the importance of Jacques the Fatalist and His Master, which he wrote in the last quarter of the century and is one of the cornerstones of the history of Western literature, with the following words: "I claim that, in the absence of Jacques the Fatalist, the history of the novel is neither understandable nor complete."
In this three-act play, which Kundera wrote after the Soviet troops invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968 and could only be published in France in 1981, as a tribute to the memory of the French writer Denis Diderot, the butler, in his own words, "walks through modern Western history from beginning to end". He and his master go on a journey full of luck, honor, friendship and love. Two writers, two centuries meet. Novel and theater meet. Kundera brings the formal freedom that Diderot gifted to the novel to the theater stage.
