Judith-Hasan Ali Yücel Classics
C. Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863): German poet and playwright. He was born as the son of a bricklayer. He spent his childhood and youth in poverty, and his education was always interrupted by economic difficulties. He visited many European cities with an educational scholarship given by the King of Denmark. He settled in Vienna, married a theater actor and devoted his life to writing. Judith, which quickly placed Hebbel among the most important tragedians of 19th century German literature, was published in 1941 and was staged in Hamburg and Berlin a year later. This tragedy was inspired by the "Book of Judith" in the Old Testament. The cruel ruler Holofernes has arrived at the gates of Bethulia. In these days when the faith of the Jewish people, condemned to hunger, thirst and fear, is tested, an unlikely hero will radically change the course of events.
