Kantarma is a village parched with thirst. Taurus Mountains stop the rain; Neither the soil can reach water nor the poor villager can get decent bread... One day, as a result of an attempt undertaken with the ignorant courage of the village headman Musa and his friend Hidir, with whom he constantly quarrels, the Grand President visits Kantarma. “What is your wish?” he asks the villager. Hidir says "water" and nothing else. Some of the village people support him. Others want a Quran course to be opened; This is their only important (!) wish in the world. The Grand President refuses both wishes. A Quran course is soon opened in the village and a teacher is appointed. Water studies progress at the speed of a turtle. A chassis engineer is eventually assigned for this job. The chassis is a little dirty... Even though it's late, machines are brought in, drilling is done and finally water gushes out from the ground. However, water is acidic. Instead of giving life to the land and the Kantarma villagers, it becomes a problem. In a sense, this bitter water is the beginning of the end...

In this novel, Fakir Baykurt shows us that the path of the mind is not always the same. How the well-backed elite, who put their interests before everything else, took advantage of the bureaucracy; On the other hand, it tells how the ignorant villager, who cannot help himself because of poverty, is crushed by them when conflict comes between them.
