- One of the most important sources we have today about the life that went on in the wide geography under the rule of the Ottoman Empire in the 17th century is the Seyahatname of Evliya Çelebi, one of the most popular and productive figures of Ottoman historiography. In this enormous body of information, which fills ten volumes, information about hundreds of cities and communities that are miles away from each other, sometimes with little to no news from each other, offers unique information for those who are curious about the daily life and social conditions in Kurdistan of that time.
We find information about the cities that Evliya Çelebi visited during his travels to Kurdistan in the 1650s in the 3rd and 5th volumes of Seyahatname. Evliya Çelebi, who first went to Kurdistan via Sivas and Harput, goes on a trip to see Diyarbakır, Sinjar and Van, 5 years after this trip that extends to Armenia. Evliya Çelebi, who participated in the expedition against Bitlis Bey Abdal Khan in 1655, transferred the rich information he obtained about Bitli of the period to his travelogue. During his journey that will extend to Baghdad, Evliya Çelebi's path will also pass through Iranian Kurdistan. The subject of the book in your hand is the Bitlis stop of this journey.
In his doctoral thesis submitted to the University of Munich in 1928, German historian Wilhelm Köhler places what Evliya Çelebi visited and saw in Bitlis, a Kurdish city, into a social and political context, using a wide variety of sources. Köhler, who has an enormous knowledge about the languages, history and cultures of the peoples of the Near East, sheds light on the history and social development of Bitlis dating back to Alexander the Great throughout the book .
