Three articles in the 47th issue of Kurdish History share a common theme. Uğur Bayraktar's "Salt Monopoly in Siirt", Mehmet Polatel's "Peasants Against the 'Senior'" and Tolga Cora's "Notes on Kurdish Workers" revolve around the issue of Kurdistan economy. Bayraktar's article on the Salt Monopoly evaluates the Ottoman Empire's attempt to monopolize salt production in Kurdistan around the idea of internal colonialism. Polatel's article, Peasants Against the Seigneur, shows how the land dispute between the Zomik Village People and Haydaranlı Hüseyin Pasha became the subject of a multi-layered conflict, and how many actors, from the local people to the regional powers, came into play. Cora's article on Kurdish Laborers also paints a vivid picture of Kurdish laborers in Istanbul through two documents, one from the late 19th century and the other from the early 20th century.
As for the articles other than these three articles that share the common theme... Fırat Aydınkaya, in his article "Haco Ağa's Fatal Hesitation", tries to understand the reasons for Haco Ağa's hesitant attitude during the Sheikh Sait Rebellion and also raises new and important questions about the role of the peasantry in the 19th century Kurdish rebellions. puts it forward. Rohat Alakom's article is about another famous agha. Alakom's article pursues the fact that İbrahim Ağa (Biroyê Heskê Têlî), the famous figure of the Ağrı Uprising, is mentioned with different names in different sources.
Anjelika O. Pobedonostseva Kaya's article, translated by Fırat Sözeri, is about the orientalist and Kurdologist Fyodor Rostopçin. Rostopçin, who undertook the translation of Şerefname into Russian and also prepared a bibliography of the Kurdish Question, could not avoid being a victim of the Soviet regime of the period, like many of his colleagues. Uğur Dursun Adsız also wrote about linguist Julius Klaprot's work "Asian Languages", published in German in Paris in 1823. Klaprot's work is important because it also includes a small dictionary containing the German equivalents of a small number of Kurdish words. Vahap Coşkun contributed to this issue with a book review that is a continuation of our last issue's file topic. Coşkun examines Georges Perrot's famous work Haymana Kurds.
There is also an interview in issue 47. How the First World War was experienced in Ottoman Kurdistan is a little-known issue. Bahoz Şavata had an interview with Celâl Temel about his book titled 1916 KURDISH DEPORTATION during the World War I and the Settlement and Population Policies of the Committee of Union and Progress (1913-1918), published in 2019 by İsmail Beşikçi Foundation Publications.
Zare Yusupova, a Yazidi Kurd who made great contributions to Kurdish linguistics, died in February. We bid farewell with Fırat Sözeri's article.
