Dersim Kurdish Therapy 1937-1938 / Mahmut Akyürekli
The grave events that took place in Dersim in 1937 and 1938 continue to bleed from within, with their social, political and psychological consequences as a wound carried from that period to the present day. The fog over this tragic past, which was deliberately kept out of sight in the black-covered notebooks of the history of the Republic of Turkey, has just begun to lift. The Dersim events and the subsequent sanctions institutionalized in the region by the state are now facts that contain indispensable clues for the historical analysis of the Kurdish and Alevi problems, which are intensely discussed today. On this occasion, it is vital to investigate what happened in those years from an objective perspective, based on testimonies and documents, so that the traumatic process in question can be brought to full awareness. In his book titled Dersim Kurdish Medicine, Mahmut Akyürekli deals with this most important issue of the recent period with a calm approach that is loyal to scientific methods. While describing the "othering" process of Dersim step by step, it discusses the subject within a wide framework ranging from the social-political structure of the region to the internal and external dynamics affecting the events of 1937-1938, with the aim of making the historical background of the events understandable. Dersim Kurdish Medicine is a refined sum of a comprehensive research including reports, archive studies, Parliament minutes of the period and oral testimonies of those who experienced the events. Akyürekli, who has critically sifted the academic information pollution and contradictory transfers that have persisted for many years on the subject with the meticulousness of a researcher, explains the development of the military operations in Dersim, the way they were carried out and their results, without neglecting the important historical figures and social groups of the period. Dersim Tedibi 1937-1938 is an important reference book that can be used to understand what happened in Dersim geography in the 1930s within the framework of an objective analysis, including all the parties and actors affecting the process.
Ottoman Politics in Dersim Izâle-i Vahset, Tashîh-i İtikâd ve Tasfiye-i Ezhân 1880-1913 / Cihangir Gündogdu - Vural Genç
Ussama Makdisi mentions that in a period when the Western-centered understanding of modernity was dominant, every nation created its own Orient and the Ottomans could not be exempt from this. The Sark in the mental background of the Ottoman ruling elite largely consisted of population groups such as tribes living in hard-to-reach geographies such as Dersim and not obeying the central authority. The papers discussed in this book provide numerous examples of this perception. In this orientalist discourse, which is frequently used in the developments written about Dersim, the local people appear as an exotic element waiting to be discovered and subsequently "civilized". In this mental world, Dersim is imagined as the "wild African ocean" of the Ottoman world, and the Sudanese practices of British colonialism are presented as an example for the measures to be taken against it. While the ideal Dersimis are envisioned as a Hanafi group that fulfills their tax and military obligations and does not fail to obey the sultan and caliph, military and civilian bureaucrats are held responsible for ensuring this transformation. These people ascribe to themselves a civilizing mission against the communities of Dersim that "resemble the wild ocean of Africa". For this reason, in the plans, the Ottoman elite, within the framework of its colonial position, would evaluate the settled population in Dersim within the framework of the pre-modern period terminology of "saki", "nomadism" and "rafz ü ilhad" and would want to legitimize its intervention here. Cihangir Gündogdu and Vural Genç are currently continuing their doctoral studies in the fields of Ottoman political and social history at the University of Chicago and Istanbul University.
Dewleta Osmanî û Neteweperwerên Kurd / Hakan Özoglu
This book is the Kurdish edition of the Book Ottoman State and Kurdish Nationalism, the first edition of which was published in 2005. Turkish Back Cover: Turks and Kurds are two important people who have lived together in Anatolia for a long time and share the same religion. On the other hand, in academic studies on Turkey and especially published in Turkey, the Kurdish issue has unfortunately remained in the corner until recently, for known reasons. However, understanding the history of Türkiye and the Ottoman Empire requires seeing the Kurds as an important part of this history. The book in your hand approaches the Kurdish leaders and their nationalism movement that emerged in the 20th century within the framework of Turkey Studies and examines the relations of the Ottoman state with the Kurdish tribes throughout history, adhering to primary sources. Another approach, which is as wrong as ignoring the role of Kurds in Turkey's history, is to claim that Kurdish identity has an unchangeable essence that can always be perceived throughout history. One of the chapters of the book is devoted entirely to examining the development of Kurdish identity in history, and argues that the meaning of the term Kurdish has undergone constant change throughout history and that one of the most important reasons for this change is the interactions with the states in which they live. Until recently, the ideological dimension was generally prominent in books published in Turkey examining the emergence of Kurdish nationalism. This contradicted academic impartiality and caused the reader to be misinformed. It is pleasing that in recent years, primary sources have begun to be published with increasing frequency and some important studies in foreign languages that pay attention to academic objectivity have been translated into Turkish. Thus, the reader in Turkey has the opportunity to more closely follow the literature on such an important subject as Kurdish nationalism for Turkey, the Middle East and even Europe, and the chance to be correctly informed. I hope that this book in your hands will contribute to further expanding our knowledge about the relations between the Ottoman state and Kurdish leaders. Hakan Özoglu is a faculty member at the Department of Turkish Studies at the University of Chicago.
Iraqi Kurds, Nationalism and National Identity in Iraqi Kurdistan / Mahir A. Aziz
Although those who are reluctant to accept the constitutional reality of the Kurdistan region insist on calling it "Northern Iraq", today the Kurds in Iraqi Kurdistan enjoy the feeling of living in security as a unique unit, capable of establishing partnerships with their neighbors inside and outside Iraq and determining their own future at an unprecedented level. They are carrying it. Iraqi Kurds, when viewed from the outside, are often treated with "wholesale" judgments, and little attention is paid to the internal political and social realities that contribute to the construction of the Kurdish geopolitical reality in the international environment. How political parties work; how democratization processes were carried out; how young Kurds see their situation and future; How the people of the Kurdistan Region visualize their own identities and the identities of those living around them is very important not only for Iraqi Kurdistan, but for the broader geopolitical scene consisting of the border regions of Iraq, Turkey, Syria and Iran. Concentrating on national identity problems, Mahir A. Aziz accepts that identities are mobile and changeable and that they need to be remembered and constantly changed and restructured, and focuses not on those who are most frequently examined within the framework of Kurdish policies - that is, the political elite - but on those who will most likely be the engine of change and development in the future. , accepts university students. These are young people born in the autonomous Kurdistan Region, established in 1991, who are primarily exposed to a distinctly "Kurdish" narrative of culture, social processes, history and political development. How this segment of society views themselves, those around them and their future allows those interested in Iraq and the Kurdish space within or outside it to understand the current situation and the demands and aspirations of student youth in a vital region of a state of great geopolitical importance in the region and the world. Aziz's work therefore contributes not only to the literature on nationalism and identity, but also to the literature on Iraqi Kurdistan, as well as to the broader field of Middle East politics and broader strategic and geopolitical concerns. Mahir A. Aziz is a lecturer at Saladin, Erbil and Kurdistan-Hawler Universities and the rector of Sabis University in Erbil.
Secularism, Democracy, Kurdish Question and Islam from Erbakan to Erdogan / M. Hakan Yavuz
Is it possible for political movements powered by religion to lead a country to democratization or even liberalization? Or should we adopt secular thought in order to establish a liberal and democratic system in Muslim societies? What are the links between religious movements and democracy and between democracy and secularism? Do current Islamic thought and norms pose an obstacle to democracy? Hakan Yavuz looks for answers to these vital questions in this book. Drawing strength from religion, the Justice and Development Party has chosen a conservative and democratic approach rather than a strict ideological stance since it came to power in Turkey in 2002. So, do radical religious groups prefer more moderate practices and ideology to survive in a competitive, rules-based political system? In the following chapters of the book, the Islamist political movement is traced from the establishment of the National Vision Movement to the emergence of the AKP, and the main leaders of the AKP, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdullah Gül, are emphasized and the role of these people in the development of the AKP identity, and finally the AKP government's involvement in Turkey's domestic politics. The sociopolitical effects he made and the political problems he encountered during his rule, the Kurdish issue and AKP policies in this field, and the continuity and change in the formation and implementation stages of Turkish foreign policy are discussed. Hakan Yavuz, lecturer at the University of Utah, Department of Political Sciences. The author's book titled Modernizing Muslims, Nurcus, Naksis, National View and AK Party was published by Kitap Publishing House in September 2005.
