“Mehabad had a small circular square on the southern edge, where the earthen houses fell towards the flowing waters of Çemê Savucbulak. This square was called 'Çar Çıra' because there were four lamps in the middle. Now, in this square, instead of these, stands the statue of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, with the image of four lions around it. 22
In January 1946, Kadı Muhammed of Mehabad was standing at a podium in this square, wearing his religious turban and Soviet uniform, addressing the people of this small town with a population of 16 thousand and the leading tribal leaders of the poorly defined mountainous region where the word Kurdistan used to be and sometimes still is. But the Qadi's message was directed directly beyond the city, beyond the still undefined borders of a small state, beyond the borders of Iran, to the valleys and mountains of all of Kurdistan, marking a year full of hope and disappointment that is now history .”
