Kurdish Women's Supreme Society (1919)
Kurdish women founded an association in Istanbul exactly a century ago, and the Kurdish Women's Teali Society was officially opened in 1919 with a mawlid recited in Cağaloğlu. Encum Yamulki gives a speech to the ladies who “came running from all over Istanbul”. “Our esteemed ladies and brothers, who came running to the opening ceremony of the association, promised on the Kurdish promise that they would provide all kinds of assistance and that they would do whatever was necessary for the development of Kurdishness without hesitation. The sentence 'Kurds never break their promises' has long been a proverb. Believing in my convictions, I say that the Kurd does not promise anything, but he certainly does not break his promise (Jîn, 1919).
We hope that Rohat Alakom's work will stimulate new discussions and research regarding the Kurdish Women's Teâli Society on its 100th anniversary.
