Lakhes
Plato is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential philosophers in the history of thought. He contributed to the institutionalization of philosophy and the formation of the written tradition in philosophy, and was the initiator of the idealist philosophy tradition that would determine the entire medieval thought with its two-world metaphysics. Plato, who is also important in terms of his influence on Christian medieval philosophy and Islamic thought, addressed all the problems discussed throughout the history of thought hundreds of years ago and built the first major philosophical system.
The main theme of Laches, one of Plato's youth dialogues, is based on "courage". The person who puts himself in danger for no reason is, in Socrates' eyes, more crazy than brave, more stupid and unreliable than wise and good. True courage therefore has to be the result not of fearlessness, but of wise fear, of fear in the face of something that really needs to be feared. Therefore courage is nothing but wisdom, the knowledge of good and evil. The wise man is necessarily brave. Only fools are cowards. In order to protect lesser goods, such people allow greater goods to fade away. They do this out of pure ignorance.
It is not cowardice, heroism or daring, but lack of wisdom.
