"Zülfü entered through the big gate with this novel."
-Yaşar Kemal-

The unnamed narrator of The Last Island describes this place, which he named himself, as "the last shelter, the last human corner." What he describes is almost a utopia: "Everyone was doing the best they could, the best they felt." However, this situation does not last long: The fact that the country's putschist president settles on the island to spend his retirement in peace will disturb the peace of the people living on this paradise island.

The president is determined to save The Last Island from all forms of "anarchy." He begins by governing the island's contented society through "boards" he forms by "doing whatever the majority votes indicate" and by turning the island's tree-lined road into a "park and garden-organized one." Everything seems to be in accordance with democratic traditions.

While utopia turns into a complete dystopia, there are those who rebel against this course of events, especially the seagulls...

"In this uniquely creative novel by Livaneli, man-made beings come face to face with authority... The author invites us to rethink our world. A must-read."
-Prof. Lenore Martin, Harvard University-

"When you finish the novel, you understand that it is natural for people who destroyed a homeland to destroy a small island with ease."
-Hasan Akarsu, Cumhuriyet-
