Lenin
This biographical essay on one of the most controversial and most written about political figures in recent history invites the reader to evaluate Lenin's life and political strategy in a new light. In the author's own words, it tries to reveal the relationship between Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, a lively person, and his public persona N. Lenin, in other words, the connection between his private life and political strategy. And while doing this, we take into consideration both the Lenin literature produced in the West during the Cold War period, which is full of prejudices and ideological concerns, and the speculative studies that were written in a one-sided manner based on the Soviet archives opened in the 1980s and focused more on the intimate aspects of Lenin's private life. It claims to be an alternative.
Tracing Lenin's nearly thirty-year revolutionary career, Lars T. Lih presents us with a highly romantic, passionate and optimistic portrait of Lenin, contrary to the standard "textbook" interpretation that portrays him as a pragmatic pessimist who doubts the revolutionary potential of the working class. The basic theme of his analysis is the idea of "heroic class leadership", which Lenin called his lifelong political project, that is, the Russian proletariat leading the Russian people, the majority of whom are peasants. This strategy, which preserves its essence and thematic integrity even though it has undergone some changes over the years according to conjunctural conditions, also allows us to place Lenin in the context he deserves, both within Russian political history and the international socialist movement.
According to Lih, the way to fully understand this historical figure is to understand his deep emotional connection to this inspiring political strategy, which has its roots largely in his family history and personal experiences...
