Letters
Since the letters span all phases of Spinoza's philosophical productivity, they primarily present the reader with the development of his thought and method. None of Spinoza's works is independent of the intellectual exchange that takes place in these correspondences, not only with friends but also with enemies. But in the letters we encounter not only a philosopher who helps us understand his philosophy better; There also emerges a singular and finite being who is busy with daily worries, enjoys the rose jam or local beer sent by his friends, and does not shy away from humor and, rarely, sarcasm when appropriate. What enables this is the dynamism that the letter, as a literary genre, has in comparison to the finalized works. It is the power to make the author felt here and now, even if he has long since passed away. The letters reveal what the completed work hides, the communication at the root of philosophical problematization and conceptualization. Therefore, Spinoza is in dialogue not only with those with whom he once corresponded, but also with all his readers.
