Letters to Milena
Letters to Milena, which first started with a commercial correspondence but soon turned into a passionate love letter, is perhaps the work in which Franz Kafka expresses his feelings most clearly.
Twenty-three-year-old Milena Jesenská was a very talented and impressive woman. By translating Kafka's works into Czech, Milena was able to grasp his extremely complex genius and his even more complex personality in an unprecedented way. Thirty-six-year-old Kafka used to talk about Milena with the words "She is like a living fire, I have never seen anything like this before." Kafka revealed his most intimate self to Milena, and after the end of their relationship, he trusted Milena to keep these diaries.
"How easy it is to write: a short walk I took with you. Since it is so easy, one should stop writing out of shame. (...) You were walking next to me, Milena, imagine, you walked next to me."
