She was definitely not a beauty. But to say “she was not a beauty” would be unfair to her. It would be more accurate to say “she was not a beauty worthy of herself.” I have only one photograph of her. There is also the date and a note on the back of the photograph; August 1963. The year President Kennedy was shot in the head. She is sitting on the breakwater on the beach as if she were at a summer house somewhere, smiling a little grimly.

Her hair is cut short in the Jean Seberg style and she is wearing a long-sleeved dress made of red striped fabric. She looks both a little strange and beautiful. It is a beauty that touches one’s heart. Nobody knows why my girlfriend died. For some reason I doubt whether he knows or not.
