Author: Robin Hahnel, Michael Albert

Looking to the Future stands in a very important place in terms of both rejecting this necessity design and proving the feasibility of a third way called participatory economy by overcoming the deadlock of either a market economy or a command economy. Albert and Hahnel oppose the assumption that an efficient economy requires hierarchical work order, unequal consumption and the market as a coordinating factor. According to the authors, it is possible and extremely necessary to direct economic life much more efficiently than the other two alternatives, taking into account fundamental values such as solidarity, equality, freedom, justice and creativity. The participatory economy project attaches fundamental importance to continuous rotation, which makes a hierarchical structure in workplaces impossible, and to the development of work combinations that enable everyone to do equally creative and routine work. In this way, the hierarchy obstacle that the market economy, which is undoubtedly more creative than the command economy, poses to the spread of creativity is overcome. The project is being developed with concrete and detailed suggestions, such as directing production by a council of employees rather than a fixed group, and ensuring the balance between production and consumption through a flexible and democratic planning process in which everyone can participate via computers.
