Lord Jim
"I know very well that I jumped into that boat."
Jim, the second captain of the Patna ship, is a young man who dreams of becoming a hero. But when Patna is in danger of sinking, Jim gets scared and abandons his dreams of heroism and jumps off the ship. As a result of the investigation, he is banned from captaincy; But the real punishment takes shape in his own heart and mind. Crushed under the burden of lifelong shame and guilt for violating the rule of "the captain is the last to leave the ship" according to the unwritten moral law of maritime, Jim eventually escapes to the country of Patusan near Malaya, where he defends the interests of the people there, meaning "Lord" in the local language. He gains the title of "Tuan". He finds peace by winning the love of a mixed-race woman named Jewel, as well as the respect of the people. However, this does not end there.
Conrad, while telling the Patna incident, was inspired by the accident of the SS Jeddah ship, which was carrying approximately a thousand Malayali pilgrims from Penang to Jeddah in 1880. Whatever the style, the theme reflects Conrad's approach: "Those who read my books should know that I believe that the world is based on simple ideas that are as old as mountains and hills, most of all the idea of loyalty."
Conrad, who interprets loyalty as a defense barrier created by man against nothingness, corruption, and the evil within himself that surrounds him and sometimes of which he is unaware, examines in his work, with a poetic expression, the question of where the encounter between the evil outside man and the evil within him will lead if this barrier is destroyed.
