Love and Sexuality in the West
Love and Sexuality in the West, compiled by historian Georges Duby, one of the important representatives of the Annales tradition, examines the changes that many concepts such as inter-gender relations, homosexuality, divorce, birth control and adultery have undergone throughout history from different aspects, while also bringing a new breath to historiography. Consisting of 23 articles, the book, based on meticulous research, introduces important figures from the Sumerian Goddess Inanna to Sappho of Lesbos, from the Megarian poet Theognis to Saint Hieranymus, in their most special aspects, and presents thousands of years of social change on the axis of love and sexuality, extending from Ancient Egypt to the present day.
"With a speed that left many people's mouths agape, before our eyes, all the roofs that had been established for centuries to regulate the relations between the sexes collapsed. Prohibitions disappeared. Bodies became naked. We got used to not blushing when we heard certain words. (...) This revolution has affected the economy for generations." or it was more fundamental and deeper than all the changes seen in culture; the other shocks we call revolutions remained superficial and temporary; this revolution completely changed the distribution of roles and power between men and women, abolishing the orders that had been established since the beginning of humanity.
