Samuel Beckett's entire art is based on the suffering of the individual in a painful adventure of existence that he cannot understand. Beckett almost rephrased Descartes' famous statement as "I suffer, therefore I exist." The characters he creates are lonely, tired and solipsistic anti-heroes trying to escape from the "fiasco" of the outside world. Although it is a first work, Loveless Relationships is the forerunner of Beckett's anti-heroes, who will take alienation to the extreme in Beckett's writing and world literature, who do not want to surrender to the meaningless chaos of the modern world, who refuse to be a mere spectator, sometimes even a voyeur, in the face of daily life that flows beyond their understanding. The one who prefers is an inert rebel. Belacqua Shuah, a poet and Western languages student who reads and tries to understand Dante with love (Beckett also took the name of the hero from the Divine Comedy), is very fond of alcohol, is a jerk and a slob. With his constantly aching feet, he is in trouble with the petty bourgeoisie and intellectuals of Dublin, who are portrayed cynically. He is aware of the gap between his body, the outside world to which his body belongs, and his mind. Always; He stubbornly believes that a mental hospital is where his heart belongs. Just like other Beckett characters we know, he prefers a bicycle to being with a woman; love and affection are concepts far from it; These are grotesque relationships with women. Perhaps because they will never understand the dark world in which he wants to disappear and will always look at his painful adventure of existence with suspicion, the women he is with ironically die and disappear from his life. The stories are in harmony with the chronological flow of Belacqua Shuah's life, from his student life to his death as a result of anesthesia during an operation; At the same time, each can be read independently and as a whole within itself. The striking opening story, called Dante and the Lobster, almost announces the first and eternal scream of the suffering anti-heroes in Beckett's entire writing; Belaqua wishes a quick death for the lobster that was boiled alive: "God is with us. But he is not." No death is quick in Beckett's world, because all life is a process of death. To all modern literature lovers who have not met Beckett...
