Mai ve Siyah
This work of Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil, which is considered the beginning of the Turkish novel in the Western sense, tells the story of Ahmet Cemil, who lived in Istanbul in the 1900s, his dream of becoming a famous writer and marrying Lâmia, his meeting with real life after his father's death, and then chasing his dreams again. He tells the story of sacrificing his brother for this cause, losing Lâmia, and then losing his hope of becoming a famous writer, accompanied by psychological analysis. These analyses, which we also encounter in Halid Ziya's other novels, also include psychological analyses. Ahmet Cemil dreams, but when his dreams end in disappointment, he wakes up to reality. These awakenings that come after every hope and dream increase his understanding of the facts. Every time he wakes up, he is closer to the truth and further away from his dreams. Every awakening reminds one more of one's own helplessness...
"Look at the sky, what do you see? It's a sea of mail... Try to get into it with your eyes; Try to tear those e-mails, What do you see? Mai… Always mai… Right? Then, look at the ground under our feet, what do you find? A frozen, jet black color... Oh!.. Break those black layers apart and look inside; Get down, get down, get down, get down as far as you can; What do you find? What do you see in that blackness? Black… Always black, right? I want to write something like that, if you look up, it's mai and it's always mai; If you look down, it's black, always black..."
