Mai ve Siyah
The conflict between fantasy and reality is actually at the forefront in the novel Mai ve Siyah, which tells the views of the Servet-i Fünun generation on art, literature and translation. The writers and managers of the newspaper Mir'at-i Şuûn attend the dinner given in Tepebaşı for the 10th anniversary of its foundation, and that night, “a blue night under the diamond baron” is experienced. Ahmet Cemil, who is very good friends with Hüseyin Nazmi, claims that his poems pioneer a new poetry movement. Raci, who is a supporter of old poetry, does not accept these innovations in poetry and criticizes them mercilessly.
Ahmet Cemil dreams of becoming a well-known poet, buying a printing house and marrying Lamia. Mai and Siyah, in which the answers to the questions of whether Ahmet Cemil achieved his dreams are given and in which Halit Ziya Uşaklıgil reveals himself as a master of style, also deals with the conflict between the Servet-i Fünun poets and the supporters of old literature, deserves the attention of the reader as it is one of the novels written in a modern style.
