I will say without hesitation that I can think of the possibility of not having written any of the things I have written without feeling such great sadness. But that is not the case for Mai ve Siyah! I would have liked to have written it. And it was a good thing that I did. That is why I am not saying that it is purified from any shortcomings, that it is a virtue from head to toe. But almost all of me is in it, my youth full of ambitions and dreams that will never come back and alongside them disappointments and sorrows. In fact, it is not just mine... First published as a book in 1898, this edition of Mai ve Siyah was based on the 1938 edition, which also included Halid Ziya's edits to the novel. These two editions were compared and errors that had persisted for years were identified one by one. The novel, enriched with explanatory notes and visuals from the first edition, was adapted to today's Turkish without interfering with the author's style. Although more than a century has passed since it first met with readers, this masterpiece is still as new as the day it was first serialized. Since then, it has been read, discussed, and interpreted again and again by all generations of the country. More importantly, it has always been loved. Because Mai ve Siyah is our novel.
