Marksistler ve Yahudi Sorunu - Bir Tartışmanın Tarihi (1843-1943)
In his "preface to the second edition" of his book, Enzo Traverso says: "This book was conceived as a Marxist critique of Marxism, to repeat the formula of the young Lukács. As my research progressed, I realized that the examination of this debate illuminated an important page of Jewish history. In the end, I settled on The methodological approach is an approach to intellectual history that consists of connecting conflicts of ideas to the paths taken individually and collectively by its actors and their social, political and cultural contexts, on the one hand, to consider Marxism as a full-fledged development of modern Jewish culture, and on the other hand, to consider the Jewish existence itself at the heart of Marxism. Although Marxists have proven incapable of solving the riddle of the 'Jewish question' - I quote the book's conclusion here - this is not due to their exclusion from the Jewish world, as much as to the tensions arising from its encounter with post-Emancipation European Jewry. It was tied. Marxist universalism had an extremely strong appeal to the 'jüdische Gasse' and especially to its intellectual circles, but, just as importantly, it failed to achieve a dialectical synthesis with the need to recognize Jewish specificity. In the light of today's discussions, this conclusion can be interpreted as a defense of multiculturalism that is deeply committed to the idea of universal humanity that the Enlightenment transferred to Marxism, rather than opposing it. This idea still seems valid to me today, even if I perhaps formulate some problems a little differently.”
