Christopher Marlowe, (1564-1593): The artist, whose life and death are shrouded in mystery, is among the most important playwrights of the Elizabethan period. He was born as the son of a shoemaker in Canterbury, distinguished himself with his intelligence and talent, and received the best education of his time. At Cambridge University, where he went to study religion, he was also interested in history and philosophy, learned French, and graduated with undergraduate and graduate degrees. He pioneered a new era in English theatre, in which all the possibilities of the language could be used, thanks to unrhymed lines and open meter. It is estimated that he wrote Dido, Queen of Carthage, together with Thomas Nashe, before 1587. This play includes Tamerlane the Great I-II, The Maltese Jew, Doctor Faustus and II. Edward watches. Massacre in Paris is the author's last play. There are suspicions among Catholic students that Marlowe, a discordant, quarrelsome and abusive person, was working as a state agent. He was accused of counterfeiting, prosecuted for atheism, and killed by a tavern friend.
