Memories from a Dead House
Memories from a Dead House is a bittersweet tribute to Dostoyevsky's four-year hard labor sentence in a labor camp in Omsk...
Memories from a Dead House, which Dostoyevsky started writing shortly after leaving Omsk at the end of 1854 and was serialized in Vremya (Time) magazine between 1860 and 1862, is a recorded record of the terrible experiences the author had in prison and the cruelty of the prisoners and guards he met. The main character of the novel, Aleksandr Petrovich Garyanchikov, is imprisoned for murdering his wife, and while watching "good" and "evil" rapidly change and intertwine, he witnesses the tragic situation in which humanity falls under prison conditions. These memories, held together by a loose string, also serve as a criticism of the Russian legal and penal system.
"I have never come across a better book in modern literature, and that includes Pushkin. Tell Dostoevsky I loved him."
-Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy-
