Göç - Rumlar’ın Anadolu’dan Mecburi Ayrılışı (1919-1923)
Prepared by the Asia Minor Research Center in Greece, Exodus includes oral history interviews and testimonies held in the 1950s and 1960s about the forced departure of Greeks from Anatolia. The stories of those who migrated reveal how war can be a cruel mechanism in human life, how it disrupts the social life between Greeks and Turks, how it contributes to the epic aspect of national identity, and what a traumatic effect it has on social memory.
"Turks and Greeks fought in Anatolia in 1919-1923. The Greeks were defeated and Turkey gained sovereignty. This war was a 'national cause' for both sides. Ordinary people found themselves in the vortex of the war. The war caused population exchange. Christians and Muslims lost their homes. They lost their relatives and migrated to new homelands. The stories you will read are about these events, but the events are told from the perspective of the exchanged people.
