Migration Season to the North

Tayeb Salih, one of the most important writers of African and Arabic literature, was born in Sudan in 1929. After studying at the University of Khartoum, he went to England, like the hero of Season of Migration to the North. He ran the BBC's Arabic department and then worked at UNESCO. Although he knows English very well, the reason why he writes his novels in his own language is because he embraces the culture of resistance.

Tayeb Salih, who continues the resistance not only with his language but also with the subjects he chooses, has a voice in the West with his novels in which he displays his social, religious and political identity as an African or African Arab. and has been translated into many languages. The Arabic film, adapted from the novel "Urs al Zayn" ("Zeyn's Wedding") by Salih, whose short stories are considered among the best in modern Arabic literature, was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976. Published in Beirut in 1966, Season of Migration to the North was declared the most important novel of the 20th century by the Academy of Arabic Literature in 2001.

The Season of Migration to the North, which reflects the perspective of an author who is well-versed in classical Arabic literature, Islamic and Sufi literature as well as Western literature, on the East-West problem, depicts the simple life in a poor Sudanese village, the complex relations between the village people, the suffocating pressure of traditions and the whole world. It tells about the individual's search for freedom surrounded by these; The story of the narrator, who studied in Europe for seven years and returned to Sudan, his village on the Nile, Mustafa Said, whom he met in the village, Said's wife Hasna, and Sudan...

The apparent story of this short novel is It has much deeper references and connotations. Edward Said, in his review Cultural Imperialism, says that Tayeb Salih's fiction very consciously follows and reverses Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness. Interventions and transitions from North to South and from South to North expand and intensify the colonial back-and-forth trajectory drawn by Conrad. He not only reclaims the fictional lands appropriated by colonialist literature on behalf of their real owners, but also expresses the differences and their imaginary consequences in Conrad's magnificent prose.

Season of Migration to the North is a burning novel based on cultural change and identity issues in a Third World country that has gone through colonial experience.
