Herodas (BC ?-?): Greek poet thought to have emerged in the 3rd century BC. Herodas, whose poems indicate that he was from Kos, was a contemporary of the poets Callimachus and Theokritos. His poems have survived to this day thanks to a papyrus found during an excavation in Egypt in 1891. He wrote in the genre of mimos, which is a type of drama in which ridiculous events are imitated. These works usually consist of short dramatic scenes for two or three people. In Mimos, Herodas shows the characters in the daily flow of life with their ordinary worries, entertainments, petty passions and indiscretions. In Mimos, written in the kholiambos meter developed by the poet Hipponaks and reflecting this realistic style of expression very well, he draws a realistic portrait of the society using simple and objective descriptions, words from the public language, idioms and proverbs.
