FROM EMPIRE TO REPUBLIC
PARTNER OF HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY:
MINORITIES...
The roots of the concept of minority in Islamic law go back to the Prophet Muhammad. It can go back to the time of Muhammad. With the Ottoman Empire, especially Greeks, Armenians and Jews were evaluated within the concept of minority, and this concept became more sensitive within the framework of the winds of nationalism blowing in the West in the 19th century. Under the influence of this situation, some regulations were made in the Tanzimat Period, but the sensitivity of the issue continued in the following years.
Önder Kaya, who sensitively focuses on both spatial and social issues of Ottoman history and writes meticulous studies in these fields, this time conveys his knowledge on minorities. He begins his research by considering the situation of non-Muslims from the early years of Islam, especially according to Islamic Law. It examines in depth the lives of minorities in the Ottoman Empire after the first Turkish-Islamic states and their positions within the state, dating back to the War of Independence period. He concludes his research by explaining how minorities and their rights were evaluated at the Erzurum and Sivas congresses, Amasya negotiations, the National Pact and the Lausanne Peace Conference.
Readers interested in Ottoman history and Minorities will encounter many interesting information and anecdotes written by Önder Kaya in this study.
