Modern Philosophy
Doğan Göçmen presents a compilation of his works in which he investigates the foundations of Enlightenment thought from the beginnings of Modern Philosophy to the 20th Century. With his articles discussing philosophical problems with immigrant details and historical connections, he invites his readers to an intellectual journey, especially within the framework of value and political philosophy, from the Modern Period to the Enlightenment Period, to the 19th and 20th centuries. In Göçmen's works, researcher meticulousness, deep knowledge and philosophical originality are exemplified together; The book makes a very important contribution to Turkish philosophy literature with its chapters that establish a natural intellectual and historical integrity, and suggests rethinking the beginnings of Enlightenment and its relations with today.
-Prof. Dr. Halil Turan, METU Philosophy Department Head-
The two fundamental problems of "modern" philosophy are freedom and equality. With the discussion topics he chooses, Göçmen deals with the Enlightenment's relationship with inequalities as well as its relationship with freedoms, in relation to language and religion, through striking examples such as the "Turkish call to prayer", and by kneading it from a sociological as well as philosophical perspective, we are not only interested in "enlightenment", but only in "modern philosophy". It also invites us to confront transcendental morality and justice theories in the context of Marx's analysis of capitalism.
-Prof. Dr. Adnan Gümüs, Çukurova University Philosophy Instructor-
In this compilation, Doğan Göçmen approaches modern philosophy, especially Enlightenment Philosophy, with a critical analysis; It both reveals the process of change and development of his own intellectual adventure and aims to go beyond the usual analyzes on this subject. He neither praises nor criticizes the Immigrant Enlightenment mentality. His aim is to clarify the subject by revealing some of the main ideas that form the basis of Enlightenment, with their little-known aspects, in articles prepared with great care.
-Prof. Dr. A. Kadir Çüçen, Head of the Department of Logic at Uludag University-
A Modern Philosophy narrative composed of carefully prepared articles. Doğan Göçmen makes strong and sound evaluations of the Enlightenment thought and the philosophical traditions it created, with his own understanding of philosophy. An important book for philosophy readers.
