Modernity, Capitalism, Socialism
The increase in inequality is almost never considered as anything more than a harbinger of an economic problem. In the relatively rare moments when the damage that inequality can cause to the whole society is discussed, the emphasis is mostly on how security and order may be affected by this. However, it is ignored to what extent this problem threatens the physical and mental health of individuals, the quality of daily life, the course of participation in political life, and the strength of the ties that unite society. In fact, the average income and wealth of individuals are often accepted as the sole indicator of the welfare level of the society, its ability to overcome the obstacles encountered, and the success or failure of the managerial section responsible for protecting it; The extent of inequality in income distribution is not taken into account. The meaning to be drawn from this choice is that inequality in itself is neither perceived as a threat to society nor as one of the sources of problems affecting the whole of society.
In this book, Zygmunt Bauman discusses the bankruptcy of progress, which is a project of modernity, on two fronts and states that the socialism version of modernity started with the promise of equality and ended with dictatorship; He emphasizes that the version of capitalism tries to return to the brutal logic of capital in the period of primitive capital accumulation under conditions where international law did not have sufficient sanctioning power.
