Monotheism and the Language of Violence
Translated from German: Mesut Keskin
Although religious and cultural scientist professor Jan Assmann is not well known in Turkey, he is known especially for his studies on Egyptian history, religion and culture. In his work titled 'Monotheism and the Language of Violence', Assmann delves into the historical roots of the relationship between religion and violence and makes important contributions to a debate that is still current. This relationship, B.C. Researching back to the 7th and 6th centuries, Assmann argues that a particular form of violence, namely violence in the name of God against others branded as “enemies of God,” was first possible in the context of monotheism. The author points to the texts of the Hebrew Bible as the place where violence in this sense first emerged. Assmann's book can be considered as an effort to come to terms with the violent language caused by monotheism.
