Literature is sometimes a disease: a disease whose cure is itself.

However, the effects of this disease are different for everyone. For example, after Montano finishes her novel about writers who have stopped writing, she cannot even form a single sentence. For her father, who wants to help her, real life and literature are already intertwined. Cities mix into volumes, days into pages, and personal memories into literary anecdotes. Everything gets so intertwined that even genres intertwine in the novel of the writer who tells the story of the trouble she suffers from. While our narrator’s lines are occasionally diary-like, a little memoir, and a lot of philosophical and literary speculation, what could have been an anthology of quotations instead turns into an extraordinary novel that offers an unforgettable reading experience.

With its labyrinths, references, and a plot that never loses its liveliness, Montano Disease has also been described as “the novel that Borges would have loved most in the twenty-first century.” Montano Disease was translated from the original Spanish by Seda Ersavcı.

I do not know Vila-Matas personally, nor do I plan to meet him. I prefer to read him and let his writings capture me.

–Pedro Almodóvar-

Matas has no equal in modern Spanish fiction.

–Roberto Bolaño-

Vila-Matas is the most important living Spanish writer.

–Bernardo Atxaga-
