Sigmund Freud tries to prove his thesis that Moses, who led the Jewish people to their freedom for a long time, laid down laws for them and built their religion, was actually an "Egyptian" by using quotes (especially from JH Breasted and Sellin). Although Freud lacks ultimate certainty, like most historians, he explains through psychoanalytic analysis that Moses is a historical personality, not a character created by legends, in Moses and Monotheism.

In the book, Freud stated that he detected a similarity between neurotic processes and religious events and thus was able to draw attention to the unexpected origin of religious events. He compares Judaism with other religions, especially Christianity, and explains how "monotheism" came to be accepted in the "Canaan Provinces" after going through a process. Admitting that it is not possible to obtain objective evidence regarding this study, Freud makes assumptions with psychoanalytic concepts (ego, superego, id, amnesia, latency, etc.) and applies these concepts to religions, myths and cultural fields, although not with full confidence.
