Latife Hanım
Latife Hanım's life story
It is the story of Turkey's women.
She is no longer the forgotten woman in the black and white photograph, but the hero of a unique love that turned into tragedy. The "Girl from Izmir", who fascinated Mustafa Kemal with her intelligence, ideas and the melodies she played on the piano, is a brave pioneer of her age who studied law at the Sorbonne, worked tirelessly for the civil and political rights of women, and played an important role in the creation of modern Turkey.
Latife Hanım, who worked as her husband's aide during her marriage, struggled to enter the Turkish Grand National Assembly, where women do not even step, as an elected member of parliament. When their marriage, which lasted two and a half years, ended, Latife Hanım, who was seen as the harbinger of change in Turkey with her intellectual and political identity, was forgotten.
Written by İpek Çalışlar, the author of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk - His Struggle and Private Life and Halide Edib, Latife Hanım caused a great stir when it was published and received the PEN Writers Association Duygu Asena Award.
This biographical work, with its new revised edition and meticulously prepared entirely based on documents, is also the story of Turkey's women.
