It developed mainly in times of peace and prosperity, but even when great disasters befell man, when wars left whole countries arid, when the majority of the people were suffering from misery or groaning under the yoke of tyranny, the same tendency continued to live among the poor classes in villages and cities, kept them alive despite everything and kept them alive for a long time.
