My Brother Alexei's Journey to the Land of Peasant Utopia
Aleksandr Chayanov, an agricultural expert, wrote this novel "in order to understand the problems posed by the nature of the Russian peasant economy in the period following collectivization" and published it in 1920, right after the Soviet Revolution. In My Brother Aleksey's Journey to the Land of Peasant Utopia, Chayanov depicts the future utopia based on villages against cities through his hero who sleeps in 1921 and opens his eyes in 1984. While Chayanov expresses his dreams for a better socialism, he creates a simple and understated language, taking advantage of the possibilities of utopia and satire:
A deathly sleep fell upon Alexei, and his mind, now exhausted, refused to comprehend or digest anything, no matter what. He turned off the lamp and closed his eyes, but Catherine's eyes could not leave his sight... He could only fall asleep late at night. In the first half of the 20th century, the greatest utopia of the poor people was socialism. As a utopia written while living in a utopia and noticing the problems there, Çayanov's novel is one of the lost treasures of literary history.
